Ansouis: Provence Village in May
The villages of the Luberon in Provence are all beautiful...but Ansouis, particularly in the month of May, is divine. The village is weeping roses at the moment and exploring the little cobblestone streets and passageways makes on almost weep with wonder.
I felt inspired walking up the steep incline toward the village, even seeing it from afar. Like many villages in the Luberon valley, Ansouis is perched on high. It has been named one of the most beautiful villages in France and it is evident why it made the list.
The most remarkable part of visiting this village in the month of May is the abundance of roses. It seemed they were there decorating every wall, every entrance, every surface almost. The exception was this jasmine (photo below)...just fantastic. It will merit a return in early June when it will be in full bloom and the perfume will be overpowering.
Figs are also coming...in Provence, they grow wild and take up any plot of land that is available to them. I explored, taking this narrow stone staircase, which is situated behind the village château. The figs were there, suspended overhead and their sweet early perfume filled the air.
A true visual feast.
I decided to take a walk in the fields that surround the village. They are replete with vines, cherry groves, and - just for the moment - poppies!
I came to a giant field of poppies, which framed the village in the distance perfectly. Sublime Provence.
